The Hand of Fate

The Hand of Fate is a work for open instrumentation, it uses glyph and graphic notation around tarot cards to explore themes of self-awareness, society, and the subconscious. The work begins with each ensemble member choosing a single tarot card from a fanned out deck. Each performer is asked to consider the meaning of the card either by knowledge of traditional interpretations of the card and their psychological implications, interpretation of the image on the face of the card, or intuitive messages. These tarot cards set at the center of each player’s graphic score act as the allegory for a temporal stage of the human experience enmeshed in a nonlinear graphic score with glyph notation that signifies the spaces outside spacetime.
