The Texas State Mysterium for New Music is a music ensemble founded in 1990 by Russell Riepe, Professor Emeritus of Music Composition Texas State University.

Currently under the direction of Richard Hall, the group pays homage not only to the performance of celebrated contemporary composers, but to the presentation and promotion of new and often improvisational works in the sound-arts.

Public concerts embrace a wide variety of styles and media including dance improvisations and live electro-acoustic pieces utilizing real-time digital sound processing with laptop computers and video projection.

Atlas Maior creates original music that combines e

Atlas Maior creates original music that combines elements of Progressive Jazz, Middle Eastern, Latin American, and Indian music traditions. Band members Joshua Thomson (alto saxophone, flutes) & Josh Peters (oud, lavta) create a unique sound that balances intimate moments of sincerity with powerful melodies and incendiary rhythmic passages, bolstered by a top-notch rhythm section, Atlas Maior writes original melodies exploring maqamat (Middle Eastern modal system) and harmonic progressions found in American jazz. The group composes with a wide variety of rhythms and incorporates traditional instruments including the Indian tablas, Middle Eastern dumbek, & Peruvian cajón.

For their set at NMASS 7/24/2022 they were joined by special guests Indrajit Banerjee and Roberto Riggio. The live performance is based on concepts and musical approaches exploring different methods of improvisation and cosmologies of sound. Many of their exercises utilized themes of symmetries in sound through different instrumental arrangements.

Sunken Cages is the moniker of drummer/electronic music producer Ravish Momin, who started out as an acoustic drummer and percussionist a couple of decades ago. Momin studied with Jazz master-drummer Andrew Cyrille. He has worked as a sideman with a wide array of musicians, from pop-star Shakira to legendary Jazz musician Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre (of the AACM.) In addition, he has also lead his own group Tarana on international stages for the past 14 years. As Sunken Cages, Momin plays electronic and acoustic drums, and triggers melodies and textures. He also layers loops while manipulating them in real-time to blur the lines between composition and improvisation.

Dragonchild is an expression of ecogrief and a celebration of Underworld music. Conceived by D.A. Mekonnen––saxophonist, co-founder/longtime leader of Debo Band, and Silkroad performing artist––the project is a culmination of decades of musical experimentation, embodied spiritual practice, and critical thinking. Creative inspiration includes a range of visionary artists and luminary thinkers including: Swamini Alice Coltrane, Ethiopian filmmaker Haile Gerima, and writer-pleasure activist adrienne maree brown. Slated for release in late 2022 on FPE Records, their debut album “BLACK” is the monumental result of that exploration: four one-sided albums, designed to be played simultaneously, creating an immersive and disorienting swarm of sound.

Crystal Voyager is an Austin electronic artist who’s music can be somewhat described as “psychedelic alien wave.” She started using the name Crystal Voyager since 2013 and as her vibe continues to transform, some of her bigger vocal influences are The Knife, Cocteau twins, Prince Rama, and Panda Bear, and her bigger beats/synths influences are Daniel Avery, Telepath, New Order, Yellow Magic Orchestra, and 808 State. In 2019 Crystal Voyager began a once a month synth show called “Eclectic Electro” and Vision System would do the light show for each event. They began a few video projects together which you can find on the YouTube and Vimeo. They continue to perform together and look forward to their next video project.
