Improvisational Bass Quintet

The double bass (/ˈdʌbəl beɪs/), also known as the upright bass, the acoustic bass, the bull fiddle, or simply the bass, is the largest and lowest-pitched chordophone[1] in the modern symphony orchestra (excluding rare additions such as the octobass).[2] It has four or five strings, and its construction is in between that of the gamba and the violin family.

Contrabass (from Italian: contrabbasso) refers to several musical instruments of very low pitch—generally one octave below bass register instruments. While the term most commonly refers to the double bass (which is the bass instrument in the orchestral string family, tuned lower than the cello), many other instruments in the contrabass register exist.

For their set in the New Media Art & Sound Summit 2025 these players will be exploring the full range of capabilities on their respective instruments, giving us an unconventional opportunity to witness keepers of the low end experimenting together.

Looking forward to seeing this on Sunday – September 28, 2025
