Bass Boss is a short film by Rana Ghose.
Rana Ghose investigates Dek Bass, a sound system style unique to West Bengal and sets out to meet its elusive leading light DJ Khabir. Overwhelming, aggressive, and prone to virulent fandom in his region, this form of sonic expression and assertion is of its own genesis. There is no reference to Jamaican sound system culture within. It was rendered pure and unadulterated from the mind of one person: DJ Khabir.
Rana Ghose is a curator, economist, writer, and filmmaker. He steers REProduce Artists, a collective of artists, organizers, and content creators that produce interventions in non traditional spaces, engaging with music and video in modular, sequential plays – all taking advantage of the aesthetics of spaces as varied as former mills, bakeries, and decommissioned hotels. His doctoral research was on risk construction in a regulatory context, and the underlying dynamics of how we explore the uncertainty around adopting new technologies. His current focus is a film on Dek Bass, a genre of extreme bass music from West Bengal, as well as the signature event series he continues to oversee and produce, REProduce Listening Room.
