C. Spencer Yeh/Ingebrigt Håker Flaten
7:00 pm Saturday, 7/15/17
C. Spencer Yeh (violin, vocals, electronics) + Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (upright bass)
Taiwan-born, Brooklyn-based vocalist, violinist, and electronicist C. Spencer Yeh has developed strong relationships with the Scandinavian noise and improvisation communities through his collaborations with Lasse Marhaug and others. In addition to his solo quadraphonic performance on Friday, Yeh will extend that connection through an inaugural duo with the Norwegian-born, Austin-based bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten.
Yeh is recognized for his interdisciplinary activities and collaborations as an artist, improviser, and composer. After taking a degree in film from Northwestern University, Yeh relocated to Cincinnati and began performing and recording in 1993 with his long-running project, Burning Star Core. In the 2000s, Yeh and Burning Star Core were fixtures of the international noise and free music communities; records like Papercuts Theater and Challenger document Yeh’s intensive exploration of the possibilities of his overdriven violin.
Ingebrigt Håker Flaten studied Jazz at the Music Conservatory in Trondheim, Norway under the tutelage of bassplayer Odd Magne Gridseth. A professional musician since 1995, he is a founding member of the garage-jazz trio The Thing as well as his own pan-American ensemble The Young Mothers and the Ingebrigt Håker Flaten Austin Septet.
